How to Become a Highly-Paid Dog Groomer

There are few things more satisfying in life than finding work that you actually like doing and getting paid well for it. So if you love dogs, why not become a dog groomer? There are two paths you can take to becoming a groomer - go to school or work your way up.

  • While no license or mandatory certification is required to become a dog groomer, just like any career, credentials do count a lot in the pet care industry. Dog owners will not likely entrust their beloved pooches to you unless you show proof of the skills needed to take care of their pets.

Like any other profession, the best credentials are the ones you get from school. Attending a pet grooming school gives you the benefit of on-site training and face-to-face feedback from instructors and classmates. Many states require pet grooming schools to be licensed as vocational schools, ensuring they maintain certain standards. Just remember that the quality of training varies widely between schools so make sure you choose one that best meets your goals.

  • If school will cut too much into your budget or family obligations, or if you just want to make sure you really want to become a groomer, you can take an online course or any of the increasingly available home study courses. These courses also work in areas where there might not be a school near enough to attend.

But if you need to start working immediately, you can apply at a grooming salon or a pet supply store that offers this service and start out as a grooming assistant. It could take you a year of work before you are considered for the salon's grooming program and the pay isn't that good, but at least you earn as you learn to become a dog groomer.
If you are a dog enthusiast, you'll probably be familiar with several breeds. But a groomer should learn about as many breeds and cuts as possible. The best way is updating yourself with the standards set by the American Kennel Club and checking with the National Dog Groomers Association of America, which, by the way, it would be a good idea to be a member of when you start out.
Do get the best dog grooming tools and supplies you can afford: dog brushes and combs, shedding blades, nail trimmers and files, clippers. Once you have the knowledge and equipment you need to be a dog groomer, you can choose to set up shop in your own neighborhood, take out a booth at a grooming salon or pet supply store, or offer home service.

  • You need one more great reason to become a dog groomer? It's a great way of breaking into the $43-billion pet care industry.
